DUBAI — His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday inaugurated the 13th Arabian Travel Market, and said his vision for Dubai continued to expand with emirate's fast-track growth.

Touring the exhibition, which is showcasing products and services of more than 1,750 exhibitors from 59 countries, Shaikh Mohammed reviewed several landmark development projects that are poised to drastically change the landscape and skyscape of Dubai. These included the improved master-plan of Dubai Waterfront and Dubai World Central International, the world's biggest passenger and cargo hub.

The show, which occupies all halls at Dubai World Trade Centre, is expected to draw thousands of visitors from around the world.

Shaikh Mohammed was accompanied on the tour by Tom Nutley, Chairman of Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE), which organises the event, Lebanese Tourism Minister, Joseph Sarkis, Egyptian Tourism Minister Zohair Karrana, the Chairman of Saudi Arabia's Supreme Commission for Tourism Prince Sultan bin Salman and Oman's Tourism Minister Dr. Rajha bint Abdul Emir bin Ali.

ATM 2006 features exhibitors from 59 countries with first time participation from Ireland, Japan and Poland. RTE believes the show, which has annually recorded double-digit growth, will continue to expand.

"International awareness of the show is expanding year-on-year and with the Middle East's airlines opening up new routes and destinations, additional countries are looking to leverage their tourism potential among the region's much sought-after outbound travelling business and leisure public," said Nutley.

"At the same time, Middle Eastern participation at the show is expanding as new projects seek to gain business from the many overseas buyers attending the event. The future looks good."

ATM runs until Friday night and during the week features a free-to-attend educational programme including an increased number of seminars covering the tourism industry's latest hot topics.

The show is open to trade visitors only today and tomorrow morning but the public can visit tomorrow evening and Friday evening with adults paying a Dh25 entry fee.

During the opening ceremony, Saudi Arabian Airlines stand took the spotlight as it was inaugurated by Shaikh Mohammed and was visited by Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Director of Civil Aviation Authority and President of Emirates Group. At the show yesterday, several hotel groups announced new properties and concepts, while leading regional airlines outlined their expansion programmes and new route and destination plans.
