Dubai: Local companies must share their best practices if Dubai is to become a global leader in quality management, Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation, Chairman of Emirates Group and patron of the Dubai Quality Group, told delegates at yesterday's packed Share Best Practices conference.

He said it is vital that companies benchmark their management techniques against leaders in their field to raise overall standards.

"I will always encourage and promote the pursuit of a path towards excellence," he told delegates.

"It will assist in responding effectively to the emerging needs of the economy.

He added: "We are striving to be placed on the map of international excellence."

The conference saw winners of last year's Dubai Quality Awards (DQA) address delegates on how they achieved the standards needed to win the coveted prizes.

Attitude change

Companies including construction firm Halcrow International Partnership, Xerox Emirates and Gulf Business Machines (IBM) discussed issues such as customer relations, health and safety standards and leadership techniques.

Keynote speaker Paul Statter, head of strategy and support services at the UK's United Utilities, explained how the company dragged its staff and customer approval rate from 45 per cent to an impressive 90 per cent.

He highlighted a complete change of management attitudes and strategies to one where leaders and staff members were integrated in decisions and overall business plans.

Abdul Quader Obaid Ali, Chairman of Dubai Quality Group, told the conference that Dubai's rapid economic growth must not compromise on quality.

"To become a truly effective business community that can offer services on par with the developed world, we have to gear up to instill consistent quality in our offerings," he said.

"And this can best be done when we learn to work together and share our expertise with each other." DQM's Dr Lway Nackasha explained that the awards scheme is a useful tool for companies to benchmark their performance against European standards. The DQM is based on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).

Many companies attending the conference said they found the advice useful and hope to implement some of the quality improvement techniques that were covered.
