Dubai Sports City, the world’s first purpose-built sporting metropolis in the UAE, will float tenders for some of its vital constituents in the coming weeks. It will award contracts worth Dh3.71 billion in 2006, which are part of the Dh11 billion development of Dubailand.
“We hope to award seven to eight contracts for roughly 45 percent of the City’s projects and components for construction as almost all the design elements have been completed,” said Khalid Abdul Rahim Al Zarooni, President, Dubai Sports City.
A 132 kV substation, a sewage treatment plant and associated work as well as the Sports Academy projects are some of the new tenders that would be floated in the ensuing weeks. The project’s initial cost of Dh9.1 billion has soared to Dh11 billion due to the addition of new constituents; about 75% of the development is funded by DSC developers.
“We are investing this from our resources. We have not approached the banks on the overall development,” added Al Zarooni. Dubai Sports City has already been selected as the headquarters of the International Cricket Council; it will feature a Global Cricket Academy, a David Lloyd Tennis Academy, Manchester United Soccer School, Ernie Els’ golf course and numerous arenas to host major sporting events.
