A 126th position is the best Benjamin Hoareau could do in the just-ended eighth edition of the Dubai Open Chess Championship for the Sheikh Rashed Bin Hamdan Al Mactoum Cup.
Hoareau’s result is a good show compared to his 142nd place finish out of 149 participants last year.
Hoareau accumulated three points after wins against Women Fide Masters – sisters Abdulaziz Eman and Abdulaziz Amal. Eman finished 125th with three points and Amal 133rd with 2.5 points.
Reigning male chessler of the year Hoareau also collected draws against Iranian Taghikhani Ami Ali and 13-year-old Indian Dasgupta Natun.
Hoareau has described his performance as “good”, saying that “my game has improved compared to last year. This is thanks to the training I received from George Khomeriki who came to Seychelles recently and my roommate, Grand Master Faruk Bistric, who taught me some moves. I also wish to thank the Seychelles Chess Federation, members of my family and everyone who has helped me in one way or another.”
A total of 142 chesslers from 130 countries participated in this year’s championship.
Grand Masters Sergey Fedorchuck of Ukraine, Gabriel Sargissian and Petrosian Tigran, both of Armenia, finished first, second and third respectively with seven points apiece.
Meanwhile, the Seychelles Chess Federation has said that it will be represented at this year’s Chess Olympiad by a five-member delegation.
Michel Zialor and Ralph Kimende are to leave the country on Sunday, while Switzerland-based Kurt and Peter Meier will meet the delegation in Turin, Italy, where the Olympiad will take place from May 20 to June 4.
Paule Domingue will head the delegation and at the same time attend the Fédération internationale des Echecs (Fide) congress. |
