Destined to be the tallest building in the world, the ``Burj Dubai’’ is currently being constructed in Dubai and South Korea’s Samsung Corporation is part of a consortium that is building the 160-story skyscraper in the heart of the city.
At a total cost of $900 million, the Burj Dubai is one of the largest specialist engineering projects in the world. Though the height of the structure has been kept as a secret, several reports from its subcontractors suggest that it will stand as high as 800 meters, easily beating the current titleholder Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which is 509 meters tall.
``The world’s eyes are on Dubai today as the world’s next tallest building _ the Burj Dubai _ begins to rise from this desert oasis,’’ said Kang Sang-ku, general manager of Samsung Corp.’s Dubai office.
Samsung Corp. won the bid to build the world’s tallest building in 2004 alongside partners Belgium’s Besix and Arabtec of the United Arab Emirates, outbidding seven other consortia.
The tower’s foundation, laid in January 2005, is made up of 192 piles that have been constructed to depths of more than 50 meters and are bound together by a 3.7-meter thick concrete raft. As of May it is 42 stories tall.
It is not the first time for Samsung Corp. to participate in a super-high-rise construction project. Actually, it has built reputation for such works.
The company handled the structural and exterior finish work on the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, which is 452 meters high, and also performed the exterior finish on Taipei 101, the current world’s tallest building.
As the prime contractor for the Burj Dubai, Samsung is the only company to play a key role in building each of the three, which are presently regarded as the three tallest buildings in the world.
Established as Samsung Trading Company back in 1938, Samsung Corp. has long been Korea’s premiere trading company. It merged with Samsung Engineering & Construction in 1996.
Last year, it recorded $656 million in operating profit from a revenue of $9.5 billion. As a major construction company in Korea, Samsung plans to supply some 14,000 houses in the country this year, up from 12,307 of last year.
