U.A.E.: Mohammed bin Rashid launches Dubai Metro project |

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai has formally launched the project of Dubai metro, which will the longest of its kind in the region. A documentary film was on the development of transport in the UAE was shown. The 70-kilometer long metro system will be built at a total cost of Dh 15 billion and is scheduled to be completed by 2010
Matar Al Tayer said construction of the first phase of this system includes two lines comprising of the Red and the Green line with an overall length of 70 kilometres and 41 stations including 9 underground stations. "The Dubai Metro has undergone stringent planning and feasibility studies to identify potential bottlenecks prior to construction and we will continue developing our research. The entire system will also be built on the ethos of scalability to ensure that new projects can be added on and service delivery increased as the need arises," he added
The metro will be able to commute 27,000 passengers at a time on a single train on one direction, which will be 12% of the total commuting expected to rise in Dubai by 2020. Sheikh Mohammed met with the official of the Japanese company which handles the project consultancy. He described the project as a "giant development." The launching ceremony was attended by a number of Sheikhs, Ministers, senior officials and dignitaries. (Emirates News Agency, WAM) Copyright 2006 The Emirates
