DUBAI — Tennis in the UAE has become literally a family affair. The 23rd UAE National Individual Tennis Championships which concluded at the Tennis Training Academy at Mirdif here on Tuesday proved the point.
The Abbas siblings, Hamad and Fatma and their cousin, Abdul Rahman Al Janahi, cornered six of the 13 titles at stake. The 16-year-old Hamad Abbas lost the men’s singles final 6-0, 6-2 to the much-experienced Mahmood Nader, the UAE number two. But despite the defeat to the 26-year-old university student, Abbas proved that he is the best UAE junior player.
Abbas missed out on another title when he and Omar Behroozian lost the men’s doubles to Mahmood Nader/Ghannem Al Hassani 6-3, 4-6, 6-7.
Abbas’ cousin, Abdul Rahman Al Janahi, also won the under-12 boys’ championship by beating Saud Al Ali 6-2, 6-0 in the final. But Saud atoned for that defeat as he partnered Abdullah Nasser to win the under-12 boys’ doubles. The pair defeated Majid Bushager/Abdul Rahman Al Janahi 6-3, 6-4.
Two other Al Ali brothers, Abdullah and Talal overcame Ahmed Mubarak/Rashdi Al Mansouri to clinch the boys’ under-16 title for the Fujairah Tennis Club. Hamad Abbas’ sister, Fatma was however, the star in girls’ division as she won three titles. She first took the under-12 honours by beating Amar Kamber 6-1, 6-3. She then overcame another strong resistance from Mariam Behroozian with a 6-1, 6-3 victory for the under-14 championship. She then partnered Mariam Behroozian for the under-14 doubles honours.
