DUBAI — Dubai Open Chess Championship got off to a good start, with some of the seeded players struggled to maintain top form. The event has attracted the best junior talents in the world.
World youth champion Srinath Narayanan of India caused a mild flutter on the opening day of the eighth Dubai Open Chess Championship by drawing Grandmaster Neverov Valeriy of Ukraine in a prolonged match, lasting 62 moves from a Sicilian defence.
In a day of upsets Danny Baltazar of Philippines shocked Grandmaster norm holder Parimarjan Negi of India. Negi held the advantage from the initial stages. However in time pressure he lost his way, attempting to weave a mating attack. Danny played brilliantly as he marched his king and upset Negi.
Axel Valerio drew Schmid Stefan Bundesliga of Germany in a complicated match. Axel, a 12-year old school boy from Sharjah, played well in opening to obtain a winning position. However under pressure he initiated an exchange of bishop which changed the dynamics of the position. Axel fought back and attained a creditable draw against an International rated opponent. Joey tiberio of Filipino Chess Players League said, "We are happy that chess talent among Filipinos has led to entry to such a prestigious event. Axel is a potential champion and Danny Baltazar is immensely talented."
Grandmaster Gagunashvili Merab of Georgia was held to a draw by Laabi Chian Majid of Iran in 48 moves from a Nimzo-Indian Classical variation. Grandmaster Anastasian Ashot of Armenia also held to a draw by Women International master Ghader Pour Shayesteh of Iran in 57 moves from a Sicilian defence. Top seeded players cruised through to the second round overcoming challenge against rated players.
