The gathering of 300 marine industry and boating personalities at the Christofle Asia Pacific Boating Awards in Singapore last Friday saw Dubai International Boat Show scoop the Best Asian Boat Show award. Sixteen independent judges from the marine industry across Asia judged the 2005 boat show the best event in the region.
The Dubai show is owned and managed by the Dubai World Trade Centre, a government organisation. Project manager Helen Wynd commented to IBI: 'I'm thrilled that Dubai has won this prestigious award which clearly marks its stature as one of the world's leading boat shows. The growth of the show in terms of international exhibitors and visitors over the last two years has been phenomenal, reinforcing its reputation as a must attend event. A project this size is a team effort and rewards everyone for the hard work they put in for the 2005 and 2006 events.'
Mike Derrett, consultant for the show project in Dubai from 2000 to 2005, received the award on behalf of Helen and the Trade Centre and recalled to the assembled industry VIPs that: 'A lot of credit must go not only to Helen but also to the vision of the ruling family of Dubai and the Dubai World Trade Centre who carried on with the show in the midst of rumours that exhibitions would be cancelled in the build-up to the Iraq invasion of 2003. The project carried on to great success and has now seen boat numbers afloat at the show increase from 12 in year 2001 to 120 at this year's show in March, and exhibitor numbers go from 60 to 460.'
The exclusive night in Singapore was organised by the Boat Asia Show and Asia Pacific Boating magazine with awards sponsored by Christofle. |
