  4/22/2006 9:49:46 AM

The Secretariat General of the Arab Journalism Awards (AJA) announced today that final preparations are underway for the gala awards ceremony during which the winners will be announced.

Dubai Press Club, which serves as the Secretariat General said that a large gathering of distinguished press and media experts will attend the event, underlining the importance of the Awards.

Maryam Bin Fahd, the Event Coordinator, mentioned that the Awards ceremony will be a world class event which lives up to the distinguished position of the Awards as the only initiative of its kind in the Arab region, highlighting the size of participation this year which exceeds 2400 applicants from various press media across the Arab world.

"We’ve been very keen on maintaining absolute transparency and objectivity in the judging process to preserve the excellent reputation and credibility that the awards have gained since its inception in 1999. The Awards promote principles of creativity and excellence in journalism and acknowledge those who excel in this field. AJA managed to establish itself as the most prestigious award in the region, securing a position which equals that of world class media awards," Bin Fahd added.

Three short films will be screened during the AJA event, the first of which will be dedicated to one of the prominent Arab journalism figures who will be honored during the event. The film will cover key achievements of the honoree and his/her key contributions to the development of the journalism industry in the Arab world.

The second film will feature key developments in the Arab world during 2005 which had a direct impact on media industry in the region such as the situation in Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon and Palestine.

The third film will be dedicated to victims from Arab media who have been targeted by attacks in various hot spot areas around the region. The victims, who will be honored by AJA, include martyrs: Jubran Twaini, Smair Al Qasir, Atwar Bahjat who lost their lives while carrying out their duties. Honorees will also include TV reporters Jawad Kazim and Mai Shediak who were attacked and seriously injured while they were doing their job.

"Dubai Press Club has decided that these honorable victims deserve special recognition for their bravery and commitment" she added.

"There is no doubt that Arab media community is facing a hard time shadowed by current complications in the region. Journalism has become a career associated with many threats especially in regions of conflict, i.e. Palestine, Somalia, Sudan and Lebanon" Maryam Bin Fahd commented.

The Arab Journalism Awards has witnessed important developments including the formation of the new board which has approved a number of amendments to the Awards’ system. The Prize value of the Best Column Award has been increased to US $20,000 from US $15,000, while the total value of the awards stands this year at US $235,000.
