US$6.8 Bln Plan To Upgrade Transport System In Dubai |

DOHA (Qatar), March 5 (Bernama) -- The UAE emirate of Dubai, the region's commercial hub, is spending more than UAE Dirham 25 billion (US$6.8 billion) to upgrade its road, traffic and transport services, said the executive director of the Road Transport Authority (RTA).
Aside from the Dh15 billion budgeted for the Dubai Metro, the authority has Dh 25 billion to spend on improving roads and public transport by 2008, Mattar Mohammad Al-Tayer told the local daily "Gulf News" in an interview.
Since its establishment in November last year, the RTA has come up with a five-part masterplan to ease congestion, which was approved by the State Executive Council in January, Al-Tayer said.
Explaining the master plan, he said the first part was a strategic review of transportation and traffic in Dubai, which is due to be completed at the and of this month.
The RTA will use the study to prepare a traffic and transportation model for the next 15 years until 2020.
The second part of the masterplan is a study on launching water transportation services in Dubai by 2008.
The third part is a study on public transportation, which began in January and is due to be completed in October.
Some Dh100 million had been allocated for the purchase of new public buses including luxury VIP models.
The fourth part of the masterplan addresses demand for parking space, while the final part identifies short term projects to ease bottlenecks and other road problems causing traffic congestion.
According to the report, 11 global consultants have been asked to present their proposals for solutions.
The first prize is Dh1.5 million, second prize Dh1 million while third prize is Dh500,000.
Among Malaysian infrastructure companies either involved or vying for projects in Dubai include UEM, WCT, Gamuda, Roadbuilder, Ranhil, Crest Builder and Glomac.
