A fleet of 300 taxis is being readied to bolster the support network for the Dubai Metro, it was reported on Wednesday.
Municipal authorities are to assign some 300 taxis to serve commuters on the new rail network in a bid by the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) to bolster the existing bus feeder services.
Drivers of the special taxis have undergone field planning to acquaint them with the Metro stations, and practical training has been arranged [for] 1,531 drivers, as well as theoretical training for 3,935 drivers, said Abdul Aziz Malek, CEO of Dubai Taxi Corporation in comments published by UAE daily Gulf News.
He added that Metro location maps had also been distributed to drivers in an effort to integrate taxis with all other public transport modes in Dubai.
"DTC will link the locations of Dubai Metro stations with GPS and add it to the electronic chart of [the] booking and despatch system of RTA Public Transport Agency, and provide an SMS link with Dubai Metro Stations," Malek told the paper.
On Monday, Dubai Metro saw record numbers of passengers using the service, with more than 97,000 taking a trip on the Red Line.
