Electrocutionist wins world's richest horse race in Dubai

DUBAI: Hot favourite Electrocutionist stormed up the straight under jockey Frankie Dettori yesterday to win the $6m Dubai World Cup, the sport’s richest race.

It was a fifth victory in 11 runnings of the 10 furlong (2-km) event for owners Godolphin, brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai.

Electrocutionist, 5-4 favourite in London betting, was sixth turning into the Nad Al Sheba straight but came with a courageous long run on the outside to wear down US raider Brass Hat (11-2) and 33-1 outsider Wilko for a comfortable two-length success.

The winner was drawn in stall one on the inside of the 11 runners and no horse in World Cup history had previously won or even been placed from there.

Delighted Dettori told At the Races TV: “When I got to the outside I knew he would do it because he’s got a lot of heart. From that draw I had to give two lengths away to everybody but he’s a great horse.”

Earlier, Godolphin stable companion Discreet Cat, also ridden by Dettori, put himself in line for a crack at the Kentucky Derby in May with an impressive six-length victory in the United Arab Emirates Derby.

Sheikh Mohammed told the Godolphin website: “The way that Discreet Cat won means we can think positively about the Kentucky Derby but we will have to wait and see how he comes out of this race before deciding what to do.”

Bookmakers in England quoted the colt as low as 5-1 for the first leg of the US Triple Crown.
