  3/18/2006 8:52:20 AM

BAHRAIN American Express First XVs went down battling to Dubai Hurricanes 27-13 in an Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union League match yesterday in Saar.

Much of the first-half play was dominated by Bahrain as they held off a number of Hurricane attacks solid defence.

Bahrain's first attacking move involved skipper Shaun MacPherson, Danny O'Brien and T J Ritter but the Hurricanes foiled it.

With nine players out through injury or other reasons, the weakened Hurricanes still posed a threat with a darting run by Arabian Gulf international Iutoi Tauafiah which was tackled by the Bahrain defence.

Bahrain suffered a couple of setbacks with Ali Murbati sustaining a knee injury and MacPherson leaving the field with an eye injury.

With 35 minutes gone Bahrain could have gone ahead. But Shane Stapleton missed a penalty though he made amends to touch down later for a 5-0 lead.

Just before half-time Chris Gregory scored two tries, one converted for a 12-5 Hurricanes lead.

The visitors soaked up the home pressure and went further ahead when Chris Morrison made a 50-yard run down the left.

Stapleton kicked a penalty to give Bahrain some hope at 17-8 down before John Clarke-Sutton added a further try. Rory Power gave Bahrain renewed hope with a late try before a Ben Tuomey try sealed victory for Hurricanes.
