DUBAI: Kenya’s Joseph Kiprotich Ngeny and Delilah Osiago won the men’s and women’s events at the Dubai Marathon on Friday.
Kiprotich Ngeny, who started the race as a pacemaker, led the field from start to finish and won in 2 hours, 13 minutes, 2 seconds. A sub-2:10 time looked possible, but the Kenyan finished almost three minutes outside the course record as he almost ran the last four kilometers alone. “I made the break between the 30-kilometer and 40-kilometer marks but the others started to fall away and I was left to run the last four kilometers on my own,” said the 25 year-old after clinching the first international win of his career, along with $25,000.
Ethiopia’s Giday Amah, who finished third last year, was second in 2:14:25, while another Kenyan, Elias Kemboi Chelimo, was third in 2:15:01. In the women’s marathon, Osiago went one place better than her runnerup spot last year with a time of 2:43:09. Shitaye Gemechu Debellu of Ethiopia was second in 2:45:33 and Morocco’s Kenza Wahbi came third in 2:48:47. ap
