9 February 2006
DUBAI — Runners representing 101 nationalities have signed up for this year’s Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, which will be run on February 17.
“The number of nationalities participating has soared from last year’s 45 countries,” said Peter Connerton, marathon director. “This multi-national turnout greatly assists our ambitions of ensuring the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is internationally perceived as up there with the best, including the London and New York events.”
The six-weeks postponement of the event has, according to the organisers, helped push up runner registrations.
“People have continued to register throughout the past six weeks and the 2006 race will have the largest-ever field – another key point in our international branding campaign,” added Connerton.
This year’s race is the seventh in the annual Dubai Marathon series and Connerton believes it could well be the turning point in the emirate making a huge international splash on the global running scene.
Charity drive
The Dubai Marathon will start and finish at the Dubai World Trade Centre and will feature three events — the 42.195km marathon, the 10 km road race and the 3km charity run. This year the AED25 entrance fee for the 3km event will be donated to the Standard Chartered Bank corporate charity ‘Seeing Is Believing,’ which aims to raise enough money to restore sight to one million blind sufferers over the next three years.
Marathon organisers have worked to turn the event into an entertainment-packed day of fun for all the family — ensuring it is the first major community event of 2006.
“There will be something for everyone,” said Ray Ferguson, Chief Executive, Standard Chartered UAE. “And one of the best incentives is that all those registered stand a chance of winning a Yaris car in a grand draw which will be held immediately after the races finish.” The organisers have announced that runners who registered for the marathon prior to the postponement and who collected their running numbers should retain them for February 17.
Those runners who have registered and have not yet collected their numbers should collect them at the Dubai World Trade Centre on February 14 0r 15 between 11am and 7pm or on February 16 between 11am and 4pm.
Runners can register online by posting the original registration form or the form available on the Dubai Marathon website – HYPERLINK "http://www.dubaimarathon.org" www.dubaimarathon.org –before the February 10 deadline.
