World men's tennis number one Roger Federer has begun the defence of his Dubai Open title with a straight sets victory over Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in his first match since winning the Australian Open.
He was joined in the next round by Russia's Marat Safin, who made an impressive return from a six-month injury layoff to beat compatriot and world number five Nikolay Davydenko in 3 sets.
Safin, the former US and Australian Open champion who is now ranked 53 in the world, has not played since August after a knee ligament tear he suffered at Wimbledon became too painful for him to continue.
