Dubai, Feb 2 (PTI): Shiv Kapur will tee off for the first time ever in the same tournament as Tiger Woods, when he lines up for the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic at the majestic Majlis course at the Emirates Golf Club here on Wednesday.
Jyoti Randhawa, who withdrew in the final round of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters because of a rib injury sustained during a desert safari, is also in the field and hoping that his rib is fully recovered.
Kapur is playing for the first time at the venue, where Randhawa had finished tied 11th last year.
The field is world class with three players from World's top five taking part here. Leading the field is No. 1 Tiger Woods, No. 3 South African Retief Goosen and No. 5 and defending champion Ernie Els, who missed out last few weeks of 2005 because of an injury.
Els, who created a new record by making 69 consecutive cuts on European Tour is also aiming to become the first player to defend the Dubai title. He has won it three times in the past in 1994, 2002 and 2005.
Last year Els posted a final round of 68 for a 19-under par total of 269, one clear of Stephen Dodd and Miguel Angel Jiminez with Colin Montgomerie fourth.
But it was the final hole of last year's event which will live long in the memory of all those fortunate enough to have witnessed it. Trailing playing partner Jiminez and Dodd, who had moments earlier birdied the 18th to move to 18 under par, Els firstly hit a monstrous drive to cut the corner off the dog-leg
The flanker suffered a broken nose in the recent setback against Dubai Dragons but has recovered to reclaim his place in the back row.
Lock Richard Brooks has been named in the second row, winger Steve Smith is called up from the second team and there is a chance at scrum-half for new arrival Dan Patchin.
Nicolas said: “After having a week off I’m hungry to get back and help the team to a good win.”
Dubai Hurricanes are without skipper Chris Gregory who cannot travel to Doha on Friday so Ben Twomey leads the side from inside centre while John Mamea is again selected at stand off.
The Hurricanes will return to the top of the league thanks to banking three points for completing an away fixture, although the most improved team in the region are aiming for six as they continue to chase an ambitious trophy double for the season.
Arabian Gulf development officer Bruce Morton makes his full debut for Sharjah Wanderers at scrum-half for the trip to Muscat, linking up with Gulf under-19 international fly-half Kyle Bennie.
Kuwait Nomads wrap up the weekend programme by entertaining Bahrain on Friday.
