DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Martina Hingis' brilliant comeback continued when she beat Indian star Sania Mirza 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Dubai Women's Open on Tuesday.
Hingis, who ended a three-year retirement last month and has taken just six weeks to rise to 50th in the world rankings, made six of the 10 service breaks in the shabby match with Mirza.
Given a wild card entry, Hingis was making her first appearance in Dubai since winning the inaugural title in 2001. Three of the four women she beat then have since retired.
The 25-year-old Hingis reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, and defeated world No. 4 Maria Sharapova en route to the Tokyo indoors final. Next up was sixth-seeded Anastasia Myskina, the 2004 French Open champ.
Fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova lost to Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-1 in an all-Russian match.
Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, who lost to Mirza in last year's second round, beat German qualifier Martina Muller 6-2, 6-0. The 2004 U.S. Open champion dominated her opponent with a strong serve and next meets eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova.
Seventh-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy, the Australian Open runner-up, struggled with her first serve but beat Virginie Razzano of France 6-4, 6-4.
Qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine defeated Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (2), and Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia routed fellow qualifier Kyra Nagy of Hungary 6-2, 6-0 to set up a second-rounder with top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo.
Martina Navratilova, who turns 50 this year and is recovering from knee surgery, lost in the tournament's first doubles match. She and Liezel Huber, seeded fourth, were eliminated by Jelena Jankovic and Li Na 6-1, 7-5. Navratilova plans a full schedule of doubles in 2006, including the Grand Slams, and might resume singles.
