DUBAI — In a scene more reminiscent of the Winter Olympics than the Dubai Tennis Championships, Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova yesterday took time out from their preparations for the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open to enjoy a unique ‘practice session’ at the world’s first indoor alpine ski resort
Played in minus two degrees celcius conditions, and surrounded by snowy slopes and chalets, the world number three and four ranked players hit it off on specially made astro-turf within the recently opened Ski Dubai.
Both players are in Dubai to compete in the US$1 million Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open, which is the first round of the two-week Dubai Tennis Championships.
Davenport is the reigning champion of the Dubai event, whilst Sharapova is making her debut appearance in the Championships which has four of the world’s top five players competing this week.
The specially built tennis court at Ski Dubai was surrounded by five runs that vary in difficulty, height and steepness, the longest being 400 metres with a fall of over 60 metres.
Real snow covers the alpine slopes all year round and fresh layers are created daily to ensure perfect conditions cover 22,500 square metres — the equivalent of three football fields.
Ski Dubai is located in the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest shopping malls in the world.
