Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, Lawrie Shabibi is a contemporary art gallery that is housed in Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue. Art lovers can take exit 43 in the direction of AL Manara East, descent into Al Quoz Industrial Area and turn right at the traffic lights. They continue straight through the first set of traffic lights and Alserkal Avenue, and are visible on the right side. The entrance is via the gate on the right hand side, then one must take first right inside the compound and Lawrie Shabibi is the first warehouse on the left, Unit 21.
The gallery offers supports and long-term development of the careers of young international contemporary artists with a focus on those from the Middle East and North Africa. This famous art gallery also categorizes art historical exhibitions working with an older generation of artists from the region. Lawrie Shabibi is famous for liaising with curators, institutions, museums and collectors. This art gallery has been successful in introducing international artists to the region. The art space at the same time presents Middle Eastern artists to the international contemporary arts community. Lawrie Shabibi conducts regular programme of exhibitions, screenings and talks, publishing catalogues. They participate in international art fairs also. Lawrie Shabibi has been a forerunner in the enlistment of the contemporary art scene in Dubai.
Founded in March 2011, Lawrie Shabibi takes a 3000 square foot warehouse space in Dubai’s Al-Quoz industrial district. Lawrie Shabibi engages the community by regularly organising public programmes such as artist talks and screenings, both at the gallery and at not-for-profit spaces in Dubai. Artists that have represented at the gallery include Nabil Nahas, Hamra Abbas, Wafaa Bilal, Asad Faulwell, Selma Gurbuz, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Driss Oudahi, Shahpour Pouyan, Marwan Sahmarani, Larissa Sansour, Yasam Sasmazer and Adeel Zafar.
