Dubai Electricity and Water Authority was established in 1992. It was established by a decree issued by Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum by merging Dubai Electric Company and Water Department that had been working independently for several years.

Dubai Electric Company and Water Department were established in 1959 with the objective of making available to the people of Dubai an adequate and reliable supply of electricity and water.

Dubai Electric Company
It was established in 1959 when His Highness Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum issued a decree to establish the Dubai Electricity Company (DEC). Its main objective to establish it is to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity to consumers in Dubai. The Company set up its first office in a rented house near Al Nasr Square, Deira, and soon after started to supply electricity to its first consumer.

Dubai Water Department
It was also established in 1959 as in the same year that the Dubai Electricity Company was established. His Highness Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, ordered the establishment of a specialized organization to carry out the project of supplying Dubai with water.

In present days, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is known for its efficiency and reliability in every field of its operations. Due to its constant planning and forecasting DEWA has come a long way in serving  the consumers and making its contributions to the economic growth of Dubai.

Today DEWA employs about 4000 employees who constantly attempt to achieve both the quantity and quality of services with highest standards in consistency and reliability.

Thus the expansion continues in order to meet the ever growing demand for electricity and water, and keeping this in mind DEWA continues to maintain its corporate structure and functioning in the most professional and advanced ways to ensure its continued success in the years to come.

Mission of DEWA is to provide safely supply electricity and potable water. It continuously improves in occupational Health and Safety practices in order to become and remain one of the safest and efficient utilities worldwide.

It follows a safety first approach and the best international practices and also promote the safe use of electricity and water with the customers, maintain active occupational health and safety committees, review yearly health and safety procedures, have a dedicated occupation health and safety section and much more.
