The Department of Health & Medical Services is the responsible Health Authority in the Emirate of Dubai. It aims to provide, to international standards, preventive, curative and primitive health services to the community by utilizing the best technology and human resources.
Health services started in Dubai in the year 1943 in a limited scope, that was in Al Ras area in Dubai, with a small health center providing health and medicinal advice to the local community by a general health practitioner.
In the year 1951, under the auspicious of His Highness the Late Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum, the first section of Al Maktoum Hospital was constructed. This section included an outpatient department providing treatment and medicine to the patients and two inpatient wards, one for men and the other for women, each consisting of six beds. Gradually, the number of beds was increased to 30, then to 157 beds during 1973.
His Highness the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum gave his instructions to establish the Department of Health and Medical Services in 1970 charged with the responsibility of modernization and development of health care services in Dubai. The direct attention and follow up from the authorities of The Emirate has led to the marked improvement in health services provided to the local and expatriate communities in Dubai.
