Festival to showcase traditions in the UAE
Fazza – falconry, shooting and youla –
championships will be held during the month-long Dubai Shopping
Festival (DSF). The competitions will begin with youla, the traditional
dance that is performed with rifles and swords.
Ahmed Mubarak, who won last year, said he would take part this
year as well. "Inshallah, I shall come back a winner,”
he told Emirates Today. A large number of UAE nationals will be
seen recreating their past, dancing to traditional music using swords
and guns as props during the Al Youla championship, which will be
held during the festival at Global Village.
The word "youla”, which is the name of the dance, is
also an expression of imminent danger. Tribes in the past performed
the dance to celebrate victory. The Falconry Championship,
which attracted 1,600 participants last year, will take place from
January 17 to 19 at Global
Village.
It will pit the skills of the best falconry experts in the UAE and
showcase the traditional Arabian sport to the international visitors
at DSF. The competitors will vie for the Alhrahal, Alshahin and
Altbouaa categories in this contest.
One of the best falconers in the UAE is Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the event is held under his patronage.
The shooting competition has separate categories for men and women.
The competition will be held during Eid Al Adha on January 27, 28
and 29 in Al Ruwia. Last year 1,850 competitors
took part and organisers expect numbers to increase All winners
will receive cars as prizes. The festival will run from January 4
to February 4. (The Emirates Today) Dubai gearing

Shopping Festival(DSF)
2006 slogan. Its organisers are claiming the event is on course

"We're still working on our final plan, so we can't let you
know what we've got in store for the festival yet, said Mike Davidson,
President of Middle East Council Centres and the Director of Wafi
Properties.
Over 2,000 outlets will
be part of this year's DSF says the organiser, and there are 25
patrons and key sponsors. Each of these outlets will conceive its
own theme, noted Davidson. "It's very much left to each shopping
mall to come up with its theme. There will be over 115
events over the event's 32 days. There will also be
nightly fireworks at Al
Mamzer Park,Dubai
Creek and Global Village.
Events include Dubai Fashion 2006 running from January 17
to 19 at the Dubai Park Hyatt. Circus
